Children from South Hedland’s Baler Primary School raised more than $20,000 for a new school playground and took part in a colour explosion fun run on Friday. Jessica Gardiner, mother of five-year-old Melissa Woodward, said her daughter enjoyed raising the money. “Kids were very creative with it — there were a lot of kids around town asking for donations at the football games and I saw one kid at the pub getting donations,” she said. “I think the kids put a lot of work into getting donations, and it’s great to get kids thinking of ways to help each other and help the school.” “It gets them excited about school involvement and in a way community involvement.” A tally was kept online of which Baler Primary School students raised the most money, with one child gathering almost $6,000 dollars. The colour run was assisted by local police and the fire department which soaked the kids in water before covering them in colour powder. Students raced around the school with help from parents, teachers and volunteers.
