Bold town plans for Newman

Multi-storey residential buildings, new retail premises and improved parking have been earmarked for Newman’s town centre under bold new development plans approved by Shire of East Pilbara councillors last month. The Shire hopes the blueprint will stimulate economic redevelopment and improve attractiveness and liveability in the town centre. As well as residential, short-stay accommodation would also be thrown in the mix as well as a cafe fronting McCarthy Park. The plan includes additional car, caravan and trailer parking. Shire of East Pilbara president Anthony Middleton said the strategy would guide Newman’s development for years to come. “The goal of the strategy is to utilise social and economic considerations in order to identify and implement ways of attracting business ventures in the Newman town centre,” he said. “It will also identify opportunities for alternate land use and potential improvements to town centre design. “Common themes presented throughout community engagement included provision for more cafes, bars and ‘greening’ of the town centre.” Mr Middleton said there was a strong community desire to see cultural elements built into the infrastructure. Consultation was undertaken with the community where the public suggested the establishment of an art and cultural space in the town centre and increased childcare provision. Other suggestions included improved access to tourist information, upgrades to children’s play equipment and more pop-up fashion and beauty offerings. There was an emphasis on encouraging diverse food and beverage outlets.
