Baseball was back in full swing at the weekend, with two games played at the home of diamond sports, Marie Marland Reserve. Teams came back from their break fierce and determined, with the Swans beating the Pirates by just one run. The Pirates had the leg up on the Swans in the first innings 2-1, but in an impressive second innings, the Pirates earned a massive five runs caught up with them. Tensions were high following a fruitless third innings for both sides, followed by one run earned by each side continuing the draw in the fourth innings. It was the Swans’ determination in the fifth innings that saw them notch up one run to steal victory, with the final score 7-6. Kevin Charles performed stunningly for the Pirates, managing two hits from three at-bats as well as three runs batted in. The star Pirate also impressed the crowd at Marie Marland with the evening’s only home run. Liam Gangell also stole the show, knocking one hit from his only at-bat, with two RBIs under his belt. His teammate Kyle Edwards was not as lucky with no runs despite two at-bats. Meanwhile on Saturday night, the Brewers sank the Sharks by 14 runs. It was neck-and-neck in the first innings but a stunning third innings by the Brewers saw them edge towards a confident lead. The final score was 4-14 to the Brewers. Fred Lindberg, from the winning squad, managed a home run. Round five is expected to begin this weekend when the Swans play the Sharks on Friday and the Pirates take on the Brewers on Saturday.
