Around 7,500 hectares has been burnt in a fire moving fast in a north-north westerly direction in the Shire of East Pilbara.

Firefighters are monitoring the blaze, believed to be started by a lightning strike, which is now burning parallel to Marble Bar Road in the vicinity of Bonney Downs Station.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises there is no threat to lives or homes, however, the fire is not contained and there is a lot of smoke in the area.

Roads have not yet been closed but motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully.

DFES is urging drivers to turn headlights on, and watch for emergency services personnel.

The fire was reported at 09:35 AM on 12 September 2017 and currently there has been 7,500 hectares burnt.
