Calls for more pedestrian crossings in South Hedland quashed by Town

Concerns pedestrian safety is at risk at Hedland Health Campus have been dismissed by the Town of Port Hedland with some areas not meeting the standard for road crossings. Infrastructure Services director Lee Furness said in a statement to council last week the site had been examined in detail during February and the area did not meet the standard for a pedestrian crossing. It follows Cr Lewis Kew Ming expressing concern at the August council meeting over the safety of patients and visitors attending the hospital. “I would like the Council to review and look into putting some pedestrians crossings in there because I noticed a family, a lady holding a baby with two kids waiting up to ten minute to cross the road near the post office and shops,” he said “I believe that in future plans for the Town, we do need (crossings) definitely (at) the hospital. “I do work in the Hospital and I have seen some terrible things, people driving badly and getting nearly hit.” Ms Furness said the area around the hospital did not meet the standard for the installation of a pedestrian crossing. “It should be noted that there are five pedestrian refuges on Throssell Road to enable pedestrians to cross the road safely,” she said. “A pedestrian crossing on Throssell Road does not meet the standard for installation.” Approval of pedestrian crossing is undertaken by Main Roads WA.
