Care for Hedland were announced as finalists at the 2021 Change Maker Awards held on October 15, which recognises individuals and organisations which make a difference through the containers for change program. Care for Hedland’s nomination focussed on its innovative efforts to engage the community and its volunteer mobile refund points in both Port and South Hedland. The organisation’s focus on customer service and its efforts to employ local people was also recognised. Care for Hedland chairperson Kelly Howlett said it was good their hard work was noticed. “This demonstrates the significant work that is being undertaken and that as a community group refund point operator, Care For Hedland is considered to be punching well above its weight,” she said. “We are also delivering great on ground results and are being recognised for those outcomes accordingly by being selected as a finalist.” “We are proud to have successfully diverted and recycled over seven million drink containers and overseen more than $50,000 back into local community groups. “This is a terrific effort for any new program in its first 12 months.” Some of the award categories are for safety, customer focus, local marketing initiative, organisation and community.
