Connor Herwig commended for bravery that protected others in 2020 South Hedland stabbing rampage

A victim of the horrifying May 1, 2020 stabbing attack at South Hedland Square shopping centre has been decorated for his bravery after his quick actions helped protect others from harm.
Connor Herwig was one of just 14 Australians granted a commendation for brave conduct on Monday as part of the celebrations for Wattle Day.
At just 19 years old, he was the youngest victim in the attack, stabbed in the neck by FIFO worker Ashley Fildes, who went on to be fatally shot by police after stabbing seven people.
Fildes, the Coroner later found, had a history of schizophrenia, had not been taking his anti-psychotic medication and had stopped attending his community health service in the lead-up to his death.
Despite his own injuries, Mr Herwig fought to protect others during the terrifying incident. After being stabbed, he reclined over the centre console of his car and kicked out through the open door in an effort to fend off 34-year-old Fildes, who also slashed his ankle.
He then saw the attacker was approaching a nearby couple. He first shouted a warning to draw the man’s attention away from them and then threw a coffee at him, successfully distracting him and briefly halting the assault.
At the time, Mr Herwig’s mother, Heather Herwig, thanked those who came to her son’s aid, including a woman who drove him to hospital.
Presenting the awards this week, Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn said those decorated showed that all lives are precious through their brave actions.
“I am proud to congratulate the most recent recipients of Australian Bravery Decorations. In the 50 years of the Australian honours system, this is the first Bravery List to be released on Wattle Day,” she said.
“The exceptional people we honour today answered a call to defend and protect with unforeseen courage. Through their actions they tell us we all matter and that all our lives are precious.
“On behalf of all Australians, thank you for your humanity, compassion and your bravery.”
