This year’s Town of Port Hedland election will see “the good, the bad and the ugly” of local politics according to incumbent Peter Carter who is set to go head-to-head with high-profile identities in the October race for the mayor’s chair. Former mayor Camilo Blanco and businesswoman Gloria Jacob have confirmed they will contest Cr Carter’s position with hopes to foster “stronger” leadership and debate. But Mr Carter said he was confident his committent to progressing projects during his one-year tenure would encourage voters to put their trust in his leadership at this years postal vote. Mr Carter won 570 of the 2489 votes last year at a unique election following a tumultuous period in which the former council was suspended in 2019. “Council have worked well together this year and we have got projects done. I’m hoping people can see that and put their trust in me again this year, but we will wait and see,” Mr Carter said. Undeterred by a failed Liberal campaign at this year’s State election, Mr Blanco last month confirmed he would try to return to local government following his council’s dismissal in 2019. Speaking to the North West Telegraph, Mr Blanco said Hedland was “going backwards” and needed a strong voice and change in leadership to highlight service gaps. Long-time local Gloria Jacob has also committed to fostering stronger leadership for Hedland with plans to take action on key issues such as education, childcare and housing. “Hedland needs a stronger leader and in essence my campaign is all about a stronger Hedland, we need a change and we need a new voice,” she said. An indoor entertainment complex, ten pin bowling, rock climbing and a children’s play gym were part of Ms Jacob’s plans to attract tourists and retain working families which she said was key to the town’s progress. She dismissed claims her previous position on council, while managing Hedland Home Hardware, prevented the arrival of Bunnings, saying her business experience gave her an edge against the competition. Nominations close on Thursday.
