Cricket ladder leaders Port Hedland thump Lions by 112 runs, Miners defeat Wanderers

Port Hedland Cricket Club were back in full force last weekend with a confident win against the Lions at South Hedland’s Kevin Scott Oval. It followed a stunning loss last fortnight against rivals South Hedland. But with their heads back in the game, the top team earned a 112-run victory. Port Hedland won the toss and opted to bat first in the round five, 35-over match. Despite a disappointing sixth over with no runs, Kev Johnston and partner Chris Briody batted at a steady pace before Johnston was dismissed with the score on 1-38. Jarred Ams didn’t have much luck on the evening, scoring four before being dismissed by Anand Jain leaving Port Hedland at 6-115 Briody batted with prowess for 30 overs, making 44, before being dismissed by Balpreet Singh with the score at 7-126. Port Hedland ended their innings with Luke Jessop and Phil Stacey on the stage at 7-143. Bhavesh Patel and Narendeepak Gandhi kicked off the innings for the Lions, making just one run before Patel was dismissed. Gandhi went on to make 21 before being dismissed in the eighth over, leav-ing his side reeling at 5-26. The Lions’ defeat was imminent, with Port Hedland’s bowlers blasting through their line-up. In a fierce 11th over bowled by Glen Robertson no runs were scored and Robertson and Ams took two wickets in the Port Hedland innings. In the end the Lions were dismissed for 31, 112 short of a win. Meanwhile, on Friday night the Miners Cricket Club defeated the Wanderers Cricket Club by 52 runs. The final result was 9-183 to the Miners who came back to the field fresh faced from a week off in round five. Miners are expected to take to the field against the South Hedland Cricket Club tonight. Over the weekend we are set to see Port Hedland Cricket Club and the Wanderers face off on Friday while Miners take to the stage against the Wanderers on Saturday.
