Two Hedland identities will go head to head for a position on council at this year’s local government election on separate tickets. Triple M radio presenter David Eckhart and sporting personality Ash Christensen have each confirmed they will contest the four vacant seats on council. They will run respectively on Mayor Peter Carter’s and mayoral contestant Gloria Jacobs’ campaign tickets. Mr Eckhart said after “talking the talk” for several years, it was time to nominate himself. “Its a case of why not. I’ve talked the talk for the past six years, I’ve challenged other people to run for six years. It’s my turn to do it,” he said. “If you can talk the talk you should walk the walk.” He said though he would not make election promises, he welcomed any invitation to sit down and listen to locals about the issues that mattered to them. Mr Christensen said he was a “proudly born and bred local” who wanted to give back to the community he loved. “It’s an incredible town and I just want there to be bigger and better opportunities for young people and the people who are usually forgotten about,” he said. “Business growth is also important and I think with more competition Hedland will be a thriving place to work and live.” “I will work to expand my network to ensure that the needs and continual growth of the wider community are reflected in the strategic plans endorsed by council.” He said councillors running on Ms Jacobs’ ticket were talented individuals and together they formed a diverse and strong team.
