The popular WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field competition is just around the corner.

Sophia Constantine sat down with WA Country Cups Fashions On The Field MC Alana McLean to ask what judges would be looking for at the 2018 Ladies’ Day race meet on Sunday, July 22.

What do the judges look for in an outfit?

The judge will look for the appropriateness of the outfit. They’re also looking for style and originality, and adaptation of trends is important as well. Millinery and attention to detail are paramount.

What are the seasonal dress requirements for a winter/spring race meet?

It’s interesting in that judges will look at the appropriateness of the outfit for the weather, but because Port Hedland is quite warm, you don’t have to wear a traditional autumn/winter racing outfit. If it’s a warm day, by all means wear something comfortable and dress appropriately for that day.

What are the benefits of Hedland now having a Country Cups fashion event?

Its been so amazing watching the growth of WA Country Cups, and the standard of the Port Hedland and Pilbara residents last year was absolutely spectacular.

Dr Sarah McEwan won the overall competition in 2016 so the bar has been set and the Pilbara has taken a really strong interest in WA Country Cups.

What are your top tips and tricks?

For a country race meet you need to make sure you have appropriate footwear. There’s a lot of dirt and gravel around so you need to make sure you can walk in your shoes all day. And make sure you have fun — the judges look for poise and grace on the runway and you’ll feel your best if you are comfortable.

What easy go-to fashion labels would you recommend?

You can get such a great range of things online now. The Iconic has really great price points. I’m loving a Sydney label called Pasduchas — they have really beautiful race wear. You need to make sure you’re wearing an appropriate length dress if you want to win Fashions on the Field. Make sure that whatever you are looking at, you’re looking for something appropriate.

Why would you encourage people to enter?

The country races is all about having fun. FOF has just brought another element to the racing. The fact that you can just go there and socialise with friends, watch the excitement of the racingand get involved in the fashion side of things makes for the perfect day out.
