Eagles clinic at East Newman to improve the footy skills of kids from remote areas

Kids from remote parts of the Pilbara have had the chance to develop their footy skills after a high-level Eagles clinic at East Newman. The Footy Fever clinic was delivered by the West Coast Eagles community engagement team on Tuesday and gave kids from Newman, the Western Desert, and Roebourne the chance to benefit from professional coaching. Eagles youth engagement coordinator for Newman Brendon Daily delivers footy clinics in the North West to get kids engaged in football. He said it was important the club’s clinics were delivered throughout the towns and in areas like East Newman. “It’s very important to continue our support in East Newman because it’s good for us to get representation here as well,” he said. “Give the kids an opportunity to get a footy in their hands and have a bit of fun.” With the East Pilbara Junior Football Carnival on the following day, Mr Daily said this clinic had attracted kids from across the Pilbara, including Port Hedland and the Western Desert. “Tonight is a little different. Because of the carnival we have got Hedland kids coming in and some of the Western Desert kids coming in as well,” he said. “That’s why tonight there are more out-of-towners than would normally be here.” SEDA College WA student Josh Thornton is undertaking a volunteer placement at the Eagles and, along with one other student, helped run the clinic. Josh said the visit to East Newman has been a highlight of his placement so far because he has got to interact with the community. “Having the opportunity to come to Newman is lovely because I got to meet new people and communities,” he said. “I like travelling to this new area because I have never been around here so it is awesome to come out.”
