The local footy season may have come to an end, but excitement over the sport has not yet dimmed, thanks to a very special guest leading an action-packed clinic for youngsters at Colin Matheson Oval.

AFL icon Nic Naitanui headed up to the red dirt on September 12, visiting local primary schools during the day and hosting the clinic in the evening, bringing together excited kids and fans for what was described by organisers as an unforgettable Friday night under the lights.

Hosted by the West Coast Eagles and supported by BHP, the Hedland Super Clinic gave young footy enthusiasts the chance to train with one of the game’s greats.

Featuring skills sessions designed to inspire the next generation of aspiring AFL players, the super clinic was a highlight for more than 150 local children and kicked off a fantastic weekend of community celebration.

“We love getting out into the regional communities and bringing the passion and joy of footy to towns like Port Hedland,” Naitanui said.

“It’s great to invest into our shared community and bring some smiles and energy to the people of Port Hedland.”

It came as BHP also hosted its annual Port Hedland Community Day on the Sunday, offering face painting, food and drinks and interactive stalls showcasing the company’s operations and people.

BHP staffers said the stand-out attraction was the Nelson Point site tour, where attendees had the chance to see the car dumpers in action and get a behind-the-scenes look at the port and rail facilities.

BHP general manager rail Kate Holling said the day was the company’s way of opening the gates and connecting with the people who make Port Hedland such a special place.

“One in 10 jobs in WA links to activity at the Port of Port Hedland, but for people outside the industry it’s rare to be able to see inside the operations,” she said.

“Our team was proud to show people what we do here, and it was incredible to see families and the community come together to enjoy the day, learn about our operations and the vital role that port and rail play in our local economy and community.”
