Gruelling test pulls big field
The recent annual Newman Triathlon was a day of successful community spirit and fantastic atmosphere as plenty of Pilbara athletes took part.
Eighty competitors tested their fitness in the Act-Belong-Commit event on April 30, with 30 volunteers assisting.
Shire of East Pilbara president Lynne Craigie said the Shire was proud to host the triathlon each year and was committed to the health and wellbeing of the community.
“On behalf of the Shire, I would like to thank our sponsors, Healthway, BHP Billiton and Woolworths, for their support in helping make this day such a success,” she said.

“Healthway has sponsored a number of community sporting events in the Shire for 2017 and still to come are the Newman Half Marathon and Family Fun Run in August and the Marble Bar Reverse Triathlon in September.”
There were four categories in the triathlon including a long course — involving a staggering 600m swim, 21.6km cycle ride and 4.8km run — followed by a short course involving a 200m swim, 8.1km cycle and 1.6km run.
The junior category comprised a 100m swim, 3.2km cycle ride and 1.1km run as well as a team category.
