This cool and confident group of young athletes made Hedland and their families proud when they dominated at the Country Championships in Bunbury last month. Locals Sienna Bennett, 13, Brooklyn Bennett, 10, Josonah Levi, 7, Ofa Cocker, 10 and Lilly Leonard, 9, travelled south for the tournament and each took home medals for their efforts. The Hedland Little Athletics members have up to 10 years combined experience on the track and field. The group had recently competed in the North West athletics competition and decided to take on the Statewide tournament for more exposure to the sport. All came back with multiple medals, including under-13 champion Sienna for her efforts in the 200m hurdles and long jump. For runners Josonah and Ofa, the trip marked their first time travelling for a country week tournament. Mum of Sienna and Brooklyn, Flo Bennett, said watching her kids on the State stage was a proud moment. “Seeing how well the kids did compared to the other associations in Bunbury was massive,” she said. “We are pretty proud.” Lilly’s mum, Stephanie Leonard, said the tournament was an invaluable experience for her regional child. “She loved it and I think it is good exposure for the kids and we are grateful to the City of Karratha for the grant that allowed us to send (them).” Sienna and Brooklyn train weekly with their parents and are expected to compete in the upcoming Little Athletics State Championships in March.
