Hedland youth invited to join Deadly Cricket Carnival during October school holidays
Young people in Hedland will have the chance to try their hand at cricket while connecting with culture and community at the upcoming Deadly Cricket Carnival.
Held at the JD Hardie Centre during the school holidays on October 8, the event is designed to encourage positive social activities for local youth.
“We’re not looking for the next Australian cricketer,” WA Cricket Aboriginal cricket specialist Adam Cockie said.
“It’s about having fun and learning the basics of cricket.”
The carnival is open to all ages and skill levels and will feature a series of skills-based games aimed at introducing young people to the fundamentals of cricket.
The format is designed to be informal and engaging, with an emphasis on participation rather than competition.
Mr Cockie said the initiative was part of a broader effort to provide meaningful after-school and school holiday activities that helped address social challenges in the region.
“We work closely with local service providers like headspace to offer support around mental health, while also promoting physical activity and teamwork,” he said.
“And if kids develop a real interest in the game, we’re there to help them take the next step into community club cricket.”
The Deadly Cricket Carnival will run from 12.30pm-3.30pm, with food provided.
