Colin Matheson Oval is undergoing upgrades this month including turf renovations, the installation of a cricket pitch and floodlight improvements in time for the start of Port Hedland’s cricket season. The floodlight changes will provide better lighting on the playing area while being more energy efficient due to LED lights being installed. Cricket Australia and WA Cricket will contribute financially towards the new pitch. The Town of Port Hedland stated work areas will be cordoned off but the rest of the oval reserve will still be accessible to the public. Town of Port Hedland CEO Carl Askew said upgrading sporting infrastructure is important and he is pleased Colin Matheson Oval will undergo renovations. “The installation of a cricket pitch and floodlight upgrades in September will make the area an even better space for families and sporting groups to enjoy,” he said. “The Town believes that investing in Hedland’s sporting infrastructure secures our town’s liveability for the future.” Community members were asked to be mindful of machinery and workers in the area while renovations were ongoing.
