One of Perth’s fastest-growing indie rock bands will take the stage at Odyssea — Hedland Music and Arts Journey in their first visit to the State’s north. Spici Water will make their first Port Hedland appearance when they play the first weekend of the inaugural Odyssea festival alongside a packed line-up that includes King Stingray and South Summit. Made up of lead singer AJ Goulden, bassist Fred Bjorksten, drummer Amber Tandy, and guitarist Kyle Ha, the band first gained notoriety with their songs Drunk Texts and Tonight. The band, formed at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, tries to encapsulate the feeling of being a young adult in Australia. Goulden said this included mix of musical genres, styles, and influences. “We like to experiment and test the boundaries ourselves,” she said. “We like jazz, hip-hop, funk, and our most recent song has used some RnB.” The band’s key influences include Skegss, Spacey Jane, and Tash Sultana which can be heard in their powerful vocals and Australiana sound. While they have made a name for themselves touring all around WA, this will be the first time the band has headed this far north which Goulden said was a great opportunity. “It’ll be the first-ever show that we’ve flown to,” she said. “We are really excited and very nervous. “It’ll be so good to play with King Stingray and South Summit. “And we are really excited to see Port Hedland because I’ve never been, even though my dad used to work in the mines up there, so it’ll be cool to see where he used to work.” The Odyssea - Hedland Music and Arts Journey is a new festival for Port Hedland and has attracted bands from across the State and country. The six-day festival at the Town of Port Hedland Civic Centre Gardens is spread over two weekends from August 18 to 27. Goulden said that as soon as the band was asked to come by the Town, they immediately said yes out of excitement. “As soon as we got the email we said we had to do this and we were able to lock it in really quickly,” she said. “We are really stoked about it.” After Odyseaa, the band is heading back to do another tour down south and has just signed on to do a number of upcoming shows with established bands Between You and Me, The Vanns, and Teenage Dads.
