Huge new tree planting project to help combat Port Hedland’s dust problems

The Town of Port Hedland has announced a five-year street tree planting program which will see 1200 trees planted throughout Port and South Hedland. The trees will be planted adjacent to high-volume roads, with the aim to suppress dust, provide shade for pedestrians and drivers and create a softer landscape. Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said local residents, community groups and businesses all want to see more trees being planted in Hedland. “This is something we’ve heard in many community surveys, so I’m pleased the Town will be planting 1200 trees over the next five years to reflect the community’s sentiment,” he said. “The locations selected for tree planting over the next five years are high-volume when it comes to drivers and pedestrians, so we’re maximising the trees’ impact. “More trees will contribute to town-wide dust suppression efforts, complimenting the existing West End greening program.” Mr Carter said trees suitable for the Pilbara’s climate would be selected for planting. The program is budgeted to cost $150,000 each financial year, with a total cost of $750,000.
