Jets, Pirates season’s first winners

Round 1 of the Hedland Softball competition’s 2017 season began on Saturday, with the A-grade Jets taking the win 6-5 against Hawks, while later in the afternoon Pirates defeated Raiders 6-3.

Jets’ top batting spot went to Kristy Morgan, who had two runs batted in off her triple, along with teammate Toni McMahon, who brought in one RBI from her four bats.

Diane Tittums contributed another single RBI to her team during her time at bat.

McMahon pitched the entire match, earning five strike- outs.

Hawks’ Tarena Narr-ier topped the batting list with one RBI off her double, with Taegane Ramirez and Lee-ana Day bringing in one RBI each.

Piratess had a stellar run, with Gemima Rahman taking the top batting spot with four RBIs from a triple and a home run. Stacy Derschow assisted, bringing in a single RBI during her time at bat.

Pitcher Mackayla Denney proved a talented arm, striking out three of the Raiders’ batters.

Raiders’ Kelly Johnson contributed a single RBI for the team. Timara Simpson of the Raiders pitched the entire game and made it hard for their opponents the Pirates, striking out five batters.

This weekend, A-grade Pirates and Hawks will face off, while in the B-grade, Pirates will face off against the Cougars. Friday night games will also begin this week, with Jets 2 kicking off against PCYC at 5.30pm, and then Jets 1 taking on the Raiders.
