Local heroes involved in last year’s traumatic stabbing incident at South Hedland Square have been recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony at South Hedland Police Station last week.

Xiaoyan Xi, Connor Herwig and security guard Clifford Hagart were awarded with Commendations for Bravery by the Commissioner of Police for their selfless actions.

The ceremony marked a year since South Hedland shoppers and McDonald’s patrons endured 10 minutes of terror when seven people were stabbed by a fly-in, fly-out worker who was later shot by police.

The accolades recognise civilians who put themselves in significant danger, personal risk of injury or death, and whose actions go above and beyond what is reasonably expected of a civilian.

Acting Sgt Pete Steeger said it was important to recognise the outstanding efforts of civilians who went “above and beyond” during the incident which rattled the mining town.

“Police officers come to work every day expecting anything to happen to them in the course of their duty,” he said.

“When a civilian steps forward in the service of their community it is especially courageous and especially important that we recognise that bravery.”

During the same awards ceremony officers and locals celebrated Aboriginal Service Medal, WA Police Force Medal, National Medal and National Police Service medal recipients.

“I think it’s really pleasing that we actually take time out to recognise the effort of our officers and particularly this morning the community members who put it all on the line for their community,” he said.
