Man charged after attempted carjacking

A33-year-old South Hedland man has been charged with aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and attempted robbery after two separate incidents yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to a property on Anderson Street, Port Hedland, at 4.30pm after reports of a domestic incident.

The suspect had already left the scene on the arrival of officers, but while dealing with the incident police received a call that the male had been seen attempting to steal a car from a 53-year-old woman in the Port Hedland Boulevard Shopping Centre carpark.

Police allege the man approached the woman while she was walking back to her vehicle and pushed her, causing her to stumble.

The man then allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat of the car trying to drive off, but the woman called out for help and bystanders helped remove him from the car. He is then alleged to have run from the scene.

Police arrived a short time later and were able to track the suspect a short distance away, charging him with aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and attempted robbery.

He was granted bail and is due to appear in court on May 29.
