More than 70 locals gathered at Port Hedland Civic Centre for the Town’s first Park Run.

The free weekly event is a global initiative, open to people of all ages and physical abilities, where participants take park in 5km timed runs.

Event director Jen Hesketh said the group of Park Run volunteers brought the Park Run to Hedland to offer people a free option to get fitter and healthier in a friendly social setting.

“It’s a race against yourself. You can walk it, you can run it, you can take your pram, your dog, it’s more of a social activity,” she said. “Unlike something like a triathlon, it’s a race against yourself to better yourself.”

The run will be held every Saturday at 7am at the Civic Centre Gardens in Port Hedland.
