Move to Lumsden touted for cattle exports

The blossoming cattle industry in Port Hedland was a focal point for the Pilbara Ports Authority at last week’s September Business Breakfast.

Hosted by the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce and Industry last Wednesday, chief executive Roger Johnston spoke to chamber members about the recent investment to revitalise livestock shipments from Port Hedland.

Mr Johnston said while exports have begun in Port Hedland from the Nelson Point berth, the authority ultimately planned to move exports to Lumsden Point once the facility was complete.

“The facility at Lumsden Point will ultimately comprise new general cargo wharves, laydown areas and a logistics hub area to ease shipping congestion associated with growth of non-iron ore trade at Port Hedland, and support an anticipated increase in livestock exports from the Pilbara,” he said.

During his presentation, Mr Johnston told businessmen and women infrastructure would be the focus in developing the cattle industry in Port Hedland.

“Pilbara Ports Authority has received interest from various parties in regards to cattle exports, triggered by the authority’s recent investment into infrastructure to reinvigorate the live export industry from the Pilbara,” he said.

“Lumsden Point has the potential to include dedicated live export yards and loading facilities and the port has received some interest in establishing the Pilbara as a source of cattle export for the Chinese market.”
