Hedland Water Polo Association kicked off its highly anticipated season with a have-a-try night at Gratwick Aquatic Centre last week.

The Hedland masses gathered at the Port Hedland pool last Friday evening, with more than 200 juniors joining in on the flippaball, while more than 20 new faces joined in the senior divisions.

Association registrar Josh Blair said it was a great turn-out of players and support for the water sport.

“We’d like to thank all parents and players for such an overwhelming response to our come have-a-try night — we’re very humbled as a sporting association and group of volunteers trying to deliver our sport to our local regional community,” he said.

“To all our helpers and volunteers who stepped up and helped out to meet our huge demand, a huge thankyou from the executive committee and well done.”

Thanks to the large turn-out, Mr Blair said flippaball and juniors would likely have six teams in the shallow end, with another four in the deep end.

In seniors there were 23 new faces at the pool showing off some fantastic talent, with team scouts eagerly looking to sign the best to their teams.

“We had them break apart, they went into the dive pool, did some skills trying to learn the game and then we had a scratch match following that,” Mr Blair said.

“They all jumped in and there’s a lot of talent out there — the talent scouts were definitely out there and signed up a few.”

Mr Blair said the association hoped to use some of the new talent to its advantage, with the upcoming country week competition being held in Mandurah this year.

Round 1 will begin this Friday, with flippaball starting at 6pm and seniors starting at 7pm.

The season will be played at the Gratwick Aquatic Centre every Friday evening, with hopes of returning to the South Hedland Aquatic Centre come the new year following the Town of Port Hedland council’s decision last week to begin renewal works on the well-loved centre.

All hopeful players need to register, and links and information can be found on the Hedland Water Polo Association Facebook page at Hedland Waterpolo News/Info.

“It’s imperative everyone registers online, it’s run through SportsTG so if everyone can do that, we’ll have a link up on our Facebook page,” Mr Blair said.

“All the new players especially so we can break them up into teams and we can all be organised for next Friday.”

The first 150 registered flippaball players will also receive packs valued at over $40. For more information and queries about registration, contact Sarah Blair at sarahpell18@hotmail.com.
