New Great Northern Highway interchange in Port Hedland complete
A new four-way interchange on the Great Northern Highway in Port Hedland aimed at supporting WA’s renewable energy transition is now complete.
The interchange, which features a large-scale roundabout underpass, two flyover bridges and four new access ramps, will provide better access to Lumsden Point port and its new logistics hub set to be in operation in 2026.
WA Premier Roger Cook said the interchange was key to the delivery of the Lumsden Point development.
“I want WA to become a renewable energy powerhouse, which is why my Government is investing in the infrastructure the Pilbara needs to help diversify our nation-leading economy,” he said.
The multi-user facility and logistics hub will provide direct shipping to the Pilbara, aiding the export of critical minerals and the import of renewable energy infrastructure such as wind turbines and blades.
WA Regional Development and Ports Minister Stephen Dawson said the upgrades would help unlock trade and investment opportunities
“Direct shipping to the Pilbara means fewer emissions, faster delivery and a more sustainable future for WA’s economy,” he said.
WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said Lumsden Point would play a critical role in WA’s clean energy future.
“These upgrades will not only streamline efficiency across this critical industrial area but will improve safety for all road users travelling in and out of Port Hedland,” she said.
The Lumsden Point development is part of the Pilbara Hydrogen Hub which will support hydrogen production to help WA transition to renewable energy.
Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said Port Hedland was now in a position to lead WA’s clean energy future.
“Projects like these are a huge investment in the Pilbara’s future, with this infrastructure to support local jobs and communities for years to come,” he said.
Senator for WA Glenn Sterle said the upgrades would help foster WA’s economic potential.
“As someone who has spent years behind the wheel, including a lot of time on the roads in and out of Port Hedland, the Lumsden Interchange is a massive win for safety and efficiency that will deliver a smoother, faster journey for the freight that keeps our nation moving,” he said.
