Hedland Senior High School has commissioned a large mural for their new sports centre aimed at highlighting Pilbara Indigenous culture through art. The requirement is that the lead artist must be an Aboriginal artist with cultural links to Port Hedland and the Pilbara region. The new sports centre has a large exterior concrete wall that provides the perfect opportunity to commission a mural to celebrate Aboriginal culture at the school. Public art consultant Corine van Hall said highlighting Indigenous culture was crucial to the project. “We want the artist concept to be an Aboriginal artwork that acknowledges Aboriginal culture in Port Hedland,” she said. “There are obviously many language groups and cultural groups but the aim is a kind of concept that embraces that. “For students on campus it will be a significant artwork and there’s an opportunity for this mural to be educational about language, history and stories,” Ms van Hall said. Ms van Hall said the artwork would be educational for students.
