New Men’s Shed opens in Roebourne in major boost to health and wellbeing in the Pilbara

Health and wellbeing services in the Pilbara just got a major boost with the announcement that a new men’s shed has opened in Roebourne. The Mawarnkarra Health Service officially opened the new purpose-built facility near its Roebourne clinic on Thursday, June 29. MHS chief executive Joan Hicks said the facility offered a safe place for men to meet, talk, be creative and exercise. “Our men are important to our families and community, and it was time to develop a program that catered to their specific needs, which they have helped to design,” Ms Hicks said. “Based on consultations between Mawarnkarra and the men in our community, it was clear the men wanted and needed a men’s support program. “Mawarnkarra Health Service is committed to supporting the men in our community to live healthy, happy lives.” Vehicle repairs, Aboriginal art making and yarning sessions are just some of the activities the facility will offer. Ms Hicks also said it can be used to deliver health services, like GP education sessions and counselling services. “The Men’s Shed will enable the men in our community to talk about their health and wellbeing in a culturally appropriate and comfortable space,” Ms Hicks said. “We need to empower our men to make good choices when it comes to their health.” MHS funded the project itself and with a grant from Lotterywest.
