New signs and art worth $50, 000 are coming Port Hedland’s way aimed at environmental protection and education

Environmental protection and education are the aim of the new $50, 000 coastal art and signage project that’s coming Port Hedland’s way. The Port Hedland Coastal Wayfinding and Public Art project was awarded funding as part of the State Government’s CoastWA grant program. The project will establish up-to-date, informational and wayfinding signage within Port Hedland’s coastal foreshore area with the aim of protecting and managing natural resources. Mining and pastoral region MP Kevin Michel said the project would protect what is a vitally important part of the town. “Coast WA grants help protect our coastline and ensures the development of it is sustainable now and into the future,” he said. “I’m so pleased the Town of Port Hedland has received funding for the Coastal Wayfinding and Public Art project. “Protecting and managing our natural resources is very important, and the installation of the informational signage will help with this. “I look forward to seeing how this project progresses and the positive outcomes of this funding for our foreshore and community.” The proposed project will also include dual naming and Aboriginal storytelling on the signs and art aimed at celebrating the region’s heritage. Mayor Peter Carter said the project will be developed in collaboration with community organisations. “This grant will help the town establish up-to-date directional, informational and, wayfinding signage along the Hedland foreshore,” he said. “We are excited about partnering with Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation to develop dual naming and have Aboriginal storytelling through signage as part of the project. “There’s no doubt the flatback turtle breeding areas in Port Hedland are a major attraction for our region, so working with Care for Hedland to design wayfinding signage around turtle nesting areas will be a great initiative. “This will include implementing a turtle sighting signage strategy as well as informational signage to inform and mitigate impacts from access to the beach during turtle nesting season.”
