Pandemic puts major capital works in Hedland on hold

The Town of Port Hedland’s capital works projects have been delayed due to COVID-19 and WA’s hard border. Mayor Peter Carter said projects such as the South Hedland Skate Park would be affected. “Delays will impact the scheduled delivery of projects including the South Hedland Skate Park shade structure and construction of the Port Hedland Sports and Community Hub’s community centre,” he said. “There is also a nationwide shortage for structural steel, impacting the Town’s delivery of schedule of capital works.” Mr Carter said factors outside of the Town’s control had delayed projects and services. “WA’s hard border has extended the delivery times for good and services and has reduced the availability of labour and contractor resources,” he said. “This has resulted in delays to some Town projects. Despite the challenges felt by local governments across the State, the Town will continue to work with contractors and suppliers to deliver these projects for the community.” The motion was carried at last month’s council meeting.
