One of the Pilbara’s steamiest towns, Paraburdoo, has broken its heat record with temperatures reaching up to 48C last week. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures at Paraburdoo reached 48C on January 22, beating its previous heat record of 47.8C set in 1998. It comes after the Pilbara suffered through a heatwave from January 19 to 21, with temperatures approaching 50C. Now just days later, the Pilbara is battling the other extreme with large downpours and flash-flooding leaving Marble Bar Road inaccessible. The Pilbara currently claims the title of recording the hottest temperature in the country, with the town of Onslow reaching 50.7C on January 13 last year.
