Pilbara artists featured in Fremantle Arts Centre’s ‘Revealed’ exhibition

Artists from the Pilbara will feature in WA’s largest annual Aboriginal art exhibition and art market — Fremantle Arts Centre’s Revealed. Returning for its 26th annual iteration, the Statewide showcase will be in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander hands, as the Aboriginal Arts Centre Hub of WA takes the reins for 2024. Artists from Pilbara art groups, Yinjaa-Barni Art, Martumili Artists and Juluwarlu Art Group will feature in the popular exhibition including Kennedy Finlay, Lynette Rowlands and Sharon Porter among others. Running until August 4, Revealed features a diversity of practice and mediums spanning painting, drawing, silk print, textiles, photography, animation, glass sculpture and linocut with each work sharing unique narratives of connection to country, culture and regional life. AACHWA chief executive Chad Creighton said AACHWA’s leadership ushers in a new era of self-determination for Revealed. “As an Aboriginal-led and governed body, AACHWA provides a genuine and deeply rooted perspective on the Aboriginal art scene across Western Australia,” he said. “We work all year round with Aboriginal art centres across the State, and by working closely with artists to reflect their aspirations and needs, we hope this year’s Revealed can increase its impact for the sector. “AACHWA’s approach to Revealed reflects our unwavering commitment to art creation, cultural strength, best practice, and the wellbeing of Aboriginal artists.” Known for championing new and emerging First Nations artists, this year’s exhibition features more than 150 artworks. Almost 70 artists will represent 27 WA Aboriginal art centres and 12 are independent artists. This year, there are 42 artists featured in Revealed for the first time, the highest number of emerging artists that have featured in the exhibition since its inception. The popular Revealed Art Market will also return with 100 per cent of sales returned to artists and art centres. The market provides an ethical, direct avenue for purchasing art by WA Aboriginal artists, all in one place. The opening night for Revealed 2024 was held on Thursday, May 9.
