Pilbara mining giant contributes $12.5 million to Hedland’s spoilbank

The State Government welcomed a $12.4 million contribution from BHP towards Port Hedland’s $120 million Spoilbank Marina project. Works currently underway on the project include earthworks to level out the site, construction of the breakwater and establishing access roads. The new marina will include a four-lane boat ramp, 21-boat pen marina with the capacity to expand to 80 pens and trailer parking for up to 200 vehicles. Mr Mcgowan said the Spoilbank Marina will offer new exciting opportunities for local people and businesses. “My Government is committed to helping Port Hedland become a better place to live, work and raise a family,” he said. “The Spoilbank Marina project is progressing well and I congratulate BHP for getting on board with this brilliant opportunity.” BHP WA iron ore asset president Brandon Craig said the Spoilbank Marina is a critical part of the new west end’s vision. “We are committed to play our part in transforming the West End into a vibrant maritime precinct for the people of Port Hedland to use,” he said. “It will increase amenity and attract visitors, support existing businesses and attract new businesses to the area and give the local economy a major boost.” Minister for Ports Rita Saffioti said the construction works underway at the marina will transform the waterfront into a popular destination for locals and visitors. “I welcome the $12.4 million funding contribution from BHP, which will help us revitalise Port Hedland’s West End,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for local businesses and contractors to get involved in this transformational project, with local jobs created, and more to come.” 52 per cent of the projects spending has been awarded to Pilbara-based businesses and 36 per cent towards registered Aboriginal businesses.
