A Port Hedland councillor has called for the introduction of night patrols and a rethink of the way the town deals with youth crime. Speaking after a June council meeting, Cr Tim Turner said a juvenile justice strategy similar to that introduced to the Kimberley should be rolled out in the Pilbara. “We need to make more financial resources available to possibly engage young people,” he said. “Why can’t we have a Pilbara youth justice strategy plan. One of the short term strategies would be making resources available to the community for patrols.” The $6.2 million State Government-funded Kimberley strategy includes night patrols, youth engagement and learning. Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said incidents at town recreation facilities involving physical and verbal assaults were having an impact on Hedland’s liveability.
