One of Port Hedland Game Fishing Club’s longest-serving volunteers has been recognised with a nomination for the 2023 WA Community Achievement Awards for her commitment to the community group. Eva Bartho, who current serves as the PHGFC treasurer, has been involved with the club for 15 years as a member and eight years as part of the committee. She has previously also held the position of club secretary. Ms Bartho said she appreciated the nomination given the award recognised the large effort and time volunteers gave to community groups. “It’s nice to know that somebody does recognise the work involved for volunteers,” she said. “Particularly when you work full-time to put in the additional hours to keep this running for the community isn’t a doddle.” Ms Bartho has worked to help provide the club with modern services including a website, email, and cloud based computing. Memberships at the PHGFC have tripled in the past 12 months and Ms Bartho said this was because of the creative work of the committee. “The fact that we have acquired additional members after floundering for a few years,” she said. “We have got some young people onboard who are very enthusiastic and on top of the social media side of things. “They love fishing just as much as everyone else in the club so it’s great to have them onboard.” Ms Bartho also said the effort of the new club president Warren Temple was instrumental in increasing the club’s memberships. She said because fishing was one of the main hobbies in the region it was important to have a strong fishing club in town. “Given that one of the leisure activities in Hedland is fishing, it provides a place where people can compete and gather. “We’ve recently started doing weekends away where you might go on a long weekend and camp. “I think it’s given the community somewhere they can go and share a loved activity.” The WA Community Achievement Awards celebrate individuals, small business, and community groups that go above and beyond. Winners will be announced at a presentation gala on October 27.
