More than 50 of Hedland’s golfers dressed in blue and teamed up for the Allwest Haulage four-ball Ambrose tournament for prostate cancer at the Port Hedland Golf Club on Saturday. Teams of three and four competed in perfect weather conditions and raised about $1500 for prostate cancer research. Les Oreo, Len John, Grant Astbury and Ross Barlow came first with a gross score of 48. Barlow hit one of the shots of the tournament with an eagle on the par-five 9th hole to give his team the victory. Marty Dacks, John Webb, Jay Dee and Clint Merek finished second with a gross score of 53. Gary Brookes, Stuart Wise, Janice Bentley and Nadine Stapleton came in third, only one shot behind second place with a score of 54. The day included novelty prizes such as longest left-handed drive and most lost balls, all in the spirit of charity and good fun. Julian Graham hit the longest blindfolded shot, Russel Lissa hit the best left-handed drive, and Jeff Brockman lost the most golf balls on the afternoon. Other novelty award-winners were team ABCJ with the most shots nearest the water and Ihndar Kalzee with the greatest Frisbee shot. To go with his eagle on the 9th, Barlow hit the longest putt of the day, and Margaret Little hit the straightest ladies’ drive. The day of golf was followed by a social barbecue and the 56-player turnout was greater than expected. The next tournament on the Pilbara golfing calendar is the Karratha Open on August 21/22.
