Port Hedland Volunteer Fire and Rescue celebrates 60 years of service
The Port Hedland Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary this month, marking six decades of service to the Pilbara community.
Established in 1965, PHVFRS has become a vital part of the region’s emergency response network.
Operating in some of the most challenging conditions in Australia, the brigade has responded to countless emergencies in the face of intense heat, vast distances and unpredictable terrain.
To commemorate the milestone, a public event will be held at the Civic Centre Gardens on August 23.
The free, family-friendly celebration will feature live firefighting demonstrations, historical displays, children’s activities including a bucking bull and bouncy castle, and a community sausage sizzle.
DFES Port Hedland district officer Kieran Mussen said the anniversary was a significant achievement for the service and the broader community.
“For 60 years, the PHVFRS has stood by this community through fires, emergencies and countless challenges in one of Australia’s toughest environments,” he said.
“This celebration is our way of saying thank you to Hedland for its unwavering support.”
To coincide with the anniversary, a new book titled: The History And Stories Of The Port Hedland Fire Brigade, written by brigade member Ruth Buckley, will be launched at the event.
The book documents the brigade’s history and includes stories and photographs from over the decades.
PHVFRS captain Spencer Hawkins said the event was a chance to recognise the contributions of the brigade’s volunteers, both past and present.
“Our volunteers come from all walks of life yet they share a common passion for keeping Port Hedland safe in the face of immense challenges,” Mr Hawkins said.
“This 60th anniversary event is a chance to celebrate their incredible legacy and showcase the strength of our community spirit.”
The event will be held from 10am-2pm on August 23 at the Civic Centre Gardens.
