Port Hedland youngster triumphs as WA riders shine at 2024 ATV MX National Championships in Northam

A Port Hedland youngster has triumphed at the 2024 ATV Motocross National Championships, claiming the title just a year after overcoming a wrist injury. Mikayla Torney, 12, was selected as a WA representative to compete at the Australian ATV Nationals after narrowly missing out on the title for the 125CC class in Darwin last year. “She was coming second in the 125CC class last year – her goal has always been just to make the podium at the ATV nationals,” Mikayla’s mother Charli Delaney said. “She was coming second, and on the Sunday broke her wrist jumping and landing wrong, so we had to go through the recovery and rehab on that and get her mind back in the game. “She’s got steel plates (in her wrist) but she’s okay.” Mikayla reached her goal after recovering from her injury, claiming the title for the 250CC junior air-cooled class on September 15. Northam District Motor Cycle Club - who celebrated their 100th year - hosted the event over the weekend, with competitors travelling from across Australia to the Avon Valley. With 42 representatives, WA dominated throughout the competition. Veteran WA champion Christopher Brenton returned after a 14-year hiatus, clinching the title in the Masters 35-40 division, followed closely by Bill Rice and Michael Bullock. In the Open ATV division, Christopher Bosnakis took the top spot, with Keenan Murphy and Jae Dowsett rounding out the podium in second and third. Glen Ashworth secured victory in the Veterans 40+ division, while Amira Schmid dominated the Women’s category. The Amateur Cup saw Bailey Langridge, Jack Langridge, and Tyler Brown all make podium appearances, with fellow WA riders Grayden Sharpe and Jayde Merrylees finishing just behind. In the Junior divisions, Hybrid 13-U16 champion Kyden Crowe also made a strong showing, placing behind Rohan Schmid, the champion of the ATV Junior division.
