Water polo made a splash at South Hedland Aquatic Centre last Friday night as the Hedland Water Polo Association season kicked off.

Reigning women’s premiersPiranhas got their season off to the perfect start when they faced off against Aztecs in the first game of the night.

Piranhas had control of the game with a strong attack, taking the win, 7-4.

In the second game, last year’s other grand finalists, Vipers, took on Orcas in a one-sided clash.

Vipers had a strong performance from their junior players, with juniors scoring five of their six goals in the 6-1 win.

Meanwhile, in the men’s competition, White Pointers had a double-header, taking on Dragons and Blackstars in two action-packed games. It was a back-and-forth contest between White Pointers and Dragons with the game tied five apiece late in the final term. A late goal from Josh Blair in the last 30 seconds was enough for the White Pointers to secure the victory, 6-5.

Then in a rematch of last year’s grand final, White Pointers and Blackstars faced off in an instant classic. Blackstars led early before a second-term fightback from the White Pointers had them in front at half-time, 3-2.

Blackstars blitzed the second half, scoring four goals to the White Pointers’ two, to overrun the Pointers, 6-4.
