Probe into why the young leave
A study focusing on young people in Port Hedland will try to understand why they leave the regional town.
The Engaging Youth in Regional Australia study launched by Dr Candice Boyd from the University of Melbourne, is looking at why despite having a large amount of economic investment local young people still leave regional towns.
Conducted over three years, the project is funded by the Australian Research Council through the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award scheme. Port Hedland is one of three regional areas in the study. Dr Boyd is hoping to talk to about 20 people, aged between 18 and 34, who grew up in Hedland.
