Region prepares for season
Pilbara locals are being urged to prepare ahead of a flammable festive wet season with almost double the number of bushfires since last year.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services Pilbara Superintendent Peter McCarthy said people should prepare as volunteers battle a demanding Northern bushfire season.
“Our volunteers have done a magnificent job fighting thousands of fires across the north of our State in recent months, with 243 bushfires in the Pilbara this season, compared to 146 last year,” he said.
DFES has advised people to tidy up, trim trees and secure items that could become projectiles in strong winds.
The superintendent recommended emergency kits include a first-aid kit, phone, radio, torch, batteries, and food and water for at least four days.
