Rovers take a loss against rival Wolves

Wickham Wolves proved the superior canine in last week’s game against Port Hedland Rovers, almost doubling the dogs’ score.

Travelling to Port Hedland for round 3 of the North Pilbara Football League, the Rovers were unable to hold on, losing to the favourites 14.13 (97) to 9.6 (54).

The Wolves’ defence line held, keeping the Rovers back until the last seconds of the first quarter when Mark Cashion burst through for the team’s first goal.

In a tactical misstep by Wolves in an attempt to play on after a Rovers point, a quick-on-his-toes Cashion immediately took down Wolves’ fullback to score the goal, with Rovers supporters thundering their applause.

Half-time saw the Rovers gain a second wind and take advantage of some holes in the Wolves’ midfield, but they couldn’t catch up to the Wolves’ startling lead.

Port Hedland Rovers coach Nat Fielding said while the boys were disappointed with the game’s result, the second half was the best game of footy the team had played to date.

“The intensity and pressure that the boys worked in the second half of the game and their hunger for the ball really shone through,” he said.

“Hopefully we can take that second half into our game this week.”

Leading goalkicker of the game was Wolves’ Claude Taylor, with five goals, making him the current lead goalkicker of the NPFL, with 11 goals for the season so far.

Following Taylor, the game’s leading goalkickers were Rovers’ Cashion with three, William Cousins with two, and Wolves’ Braden Dhu and Stephen Grigg with two each.

The win now puts Wickham Wolves fourth on the ladder, and despite the loss, the strong second half has lifted the Rovers up to fifth.

This week’s game will be another home game for the Rovers with a visit from the Karratha Falcons, while the South Hedland Swans will trek to Wickham to play the Wolves.
