School unveils mural at first assembly
After nearly 12 months of planning and painting, the South Hedland Primary School mural was officially revealed at last week’s first assembly for the year.
Painted on the main wall in the schools undercover area, the mural is part of the PALS initiative of the Department of Education.
Encouraging WA schools to develop projects that promote reconciliation in their local community, the PALS initiative stands for Partnership, Acceptance, Learning and Sharing. Deputy principal Jules Rose, who co-ordinated the program throughout 2017, said she came up with the Aboriginal- inspired turtle design by collaborating with respected community elders, Aboriginal Islander Education Officers, staff and students.
“It represents the values of our school: be your best, be respectful and be safe,” she said.
“Students were initially selected from Year 6 as a parting gift, and then it became art therapy for several children that needed a little time out or someone to talk to.
“We found the students became more focused in the classroom which led them to become role models for the younger students.”
Originating from the staff shirts, the design expanded from the ideas of students with turtles being used to represent Hedland’s beaches and mangroves, home to an abundance of turtles, fish and other wildlife.
Christa Cameron-Turland, 11, said she enjoyed being a part of the project because it allowed her to channel her passion for painting into something productive.
