One of Hedland’s best runners returned to town to take part in the Ship to Shore and ran an additional 19km before the race as he prepares for the New York marathon. Arthur Pitt was born and raised in Port Hedland and is part of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation which will travel to America in November to take part in the famous race. In preparation for the marathon, Mr Pitt raced in Port Hedland’s annual 6km Ship to Shore run on August 12. He said he was incredibly excited about the opportunity to come back home as part of his marathon training. “I’ve wanted to come back for a while and this foundation has given me that opportunity,” he said. “It’s great to be able to complete one of my milestone runs where I grew up. “The community gave so much to me and made me who I am.” The Indigenous Marathon Foundation was started by former Australian marathon world champion Robert de Castella to promote Indigenous Australians in marathon races. Mr Pitt said the organisation was all about inspiring people to lead a more positive lifestyle in their community. “It’s not only the marathon but also the journey that we go on from the start to the finish,” he said. “The finish line of the marathon is just the start of a new one. “It’s all about inspiring people in your community for lifelong healthy habits and being a role model.” Mr Pitt made it into the group earlier this year. He said his passion for athletics began early in his life. “I pretty much grew up on the South Hedland Oval,” he said. “Me and my siblings were pretty much there Monday all the way through to Saturday every week with our rugby league and baseball training. “I was very involved in community sports from a very young age.” After graduating from high school Mr Pitt moved to Perth to study exercise physiology at university. He now works for the Swan Districts Football Club and helps private athletes with strength and conditioning. Mr Pitt said he was excited to run at the New York Marathon at the end of the year. “You ask anyone who has running experience or not, they know about the New York marathon,” he said. “It’s one of the biggest marathons in the world and one of the six majors. “It’s meant to be a great experience and everyone that I’ve talked to that has done it has nothing bad to say about it.” The New York Marathon takes place on November 5.
