The Shire of East Pilbara has announced a $757,000 investment into the installation of CCTV cameras in Newman. Beginning next month, the project will see about 100 cameras installed over two stages. Shire president Anthony Middleton said community safety and crime was an important issue for Newman residents. “The installation of CCTV cameras in Newman will be an effective tool for the Newman Police and Shire staff to help address crime in our town,” he said. “It won’t stop all crime, but hopefully even the presence of cameras will deter some people from offending.” Newman Police and the Shire of East Pilbara will be able to review the captured CCTV footage. In June this year, Newman hosted a forum to address community concerns about the town’s increase in crime, including car thefts and burglaries.
