South Hedland couple Glenys Pianta and James Dhu didn’t think twice about leaving their high-paying jobs to become foster carers to some of the State’s most vulnerable youth. Since 2012, the pair have provided guidance to 20 children and “wouldn’t have it any other way”, knowing they are providing vital support in a region struggling with foster and respite carer demand. The former miner and First Nations educator currently care for nine children from a variety of backgrounds aged between two and 15-years-old. Ms Pianta said she and her partner found fulfilment in caring for young people and encouraged others in the region to consider a foster care lifestyle to fill vital gaps in the care system. “I was brought up in a family of 10 siblings and growing up my house was like grand central station, mum always had people over and was helping them. My grandparents were the same and I think that was just handed on and by instinct I ran with it,” she said. “James stays at home all day with the babies. This is a big man who used to work the mines all his life and thinks nothing of changing a dirty nappy. “Our children are used to dad being home and we are loving it. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” It comes as Hedland’s leading social agency Mackillop Family Services cry out for more carers. MacKillop Family Services State director Kellie Goes said it was essential young children who had been exposed to trauma had a clear understanding of where there home was. “We have amazing foster carers here in the Pilbara who do an amazing job, but we just don’t have enough to meet the demand,” she said. “It’s important for them to be able to know that will give them a sense of security.” Ms Pianta said locals could help the juvenile justice system by caring for children in need. “ If you want to change those numbers get out there and be a voice for those children, get them engaged, put them on track and be a support for them — it’s about getting them while they are young and being a support for them.” Ms Pianta said caring for children was a rewarding experience
