South Hedland set for $51 million nine-storey residential apartment development

A nine-storey, $51 million apartment complex could soon be the newest edition to the South Hedland horizon after Town of Port Hedland councilors voted in favour of the project. Endorsed unanimously at the December ordinary council meeting on December 14, the development on Colebatch Way would include 55 one-bedroom and 53 two-bedroom units along with restaurants, a cafe and other shops on the ground floor. An adjacent communal open space with a playground was also part of the plans, as well as a rooftop communal open space with an outdoor pool and a bar. The project will now go to the Regional Joint Development Assessment Panel with the Town’s recommendation. Mayor Peter Carter said the development was an exciting prospect for Hedland. “Having an apartment block of this magnitude so close to the Town square and other amenities will help lift the vibrancy of South Hedland,” he said. “The Town has made it a priority to ensure we encourage modern, attractive residential housing options to attract newcomers to our region. “The added components like a restaurant, café, gym, rooftop bar and other retail shops provide more options for residents as well as an economic boost.” Mayor Carter said access to affordable housing remained a key issue in Hedland and proposals such as the Azzura Square development would help in providing solutions. “The Town has also committed $40 million to address some of the challenges we have in housing,” he said. There is no timeline for the project currently.
