The biggest community event in Hedland just got bigger and will feature a circus performance at a scale that rarely occurs outside of capital cities. Lunar Circus is bringing the Loco Lounge to this year’s Spinifex Spree festival, a circus event that will feature four different dazzling performances for the Hedland spectators. On July 28 and 29 visitors to Spinifex Spree can watch performances from Mr Hubble Bubble, the Pitts Family Circus, the Wonderworld show, and the adults-only Cake performance. All performances will take place in the high top circus tent dubbed the Loco Lounge. Lunar Circus director Matt Yates said a performance of this scale and nature usually only happened in capital cities, so for a regional town to be able to host the Loco Lounge was a special and rare occurrence. “With the combination of shows at Spinifex, I think the Port Hedland audience is really lucky,” he said. “There are four great shows all in one spot on one weekend. “I’d advise them to make the most of them because it doesn’t come around every week let alone every year.” Lunar Circus has traveled all around the State, from its base in Margaret River to Broome in the north. It even came to the Pilbara a few years ago when it made a stop in Karratha but this is the first time it will come to Port Hedland. Mr Hubble Bubble, the Pitts Family Circus, and Wonderworld are performances that all ages can enjoy whereas Cake is a strictly over-18 event. People will be able to experience the amazing spectacle of bubble creation, watch children swallow swords, be amazed at elite acrobatics, and get a taste of debauchery all within the same tent. Mr Yates said the performers come from all over the world and get flown into Australia to showcase their unique and spectacular talents. Run by the Town of Port Hedland, Spinifex Spree started in 1968 and is the biggest event in the North West town and a mainstay of the annual events calendar. Town events manager David Snyder said this year’s Spinifex Spree was the largest ever as Town looked to showcase to people the great lifestyle to be had in Port Hedland. “This will be the biggest Spinifex Spree we have ever had in Hedland,” he said. “We’ve got 50-plus stalls, 20-plus food vendors, and more rides but I guess the biggest change is bringing the Loco Lounge. “The Loco Lounge is a circus-like tent that will have acrobatic, comedy, and cabaret events.” “This is our opportunity to show that we do have a unique lifestyle, and we do have great livability, and the event is what a community is after.” The changes to this year’s Spinifex Spree are the result of community feedback after the event last year, as Mr Snyder said the Town was looking at ways to design events that the community wanted. Other features of the two-day festival include live music, food, a petting zoo, rides, and fireworks.
