Tidy Towns judges tour Hedland hotspots to assess sustainability and achievements over the last 12 months

Judges for the state-wide Tidy Towns awards toured Port Hedland in conjunction with Care for Hedland, where they assessed the town’s commitment to sustainability. The Tidy Towns Sustainable Community Awards acknowledge environmental education, preservation of heritage, community action and youth leadership. Stops on the tour, held September 15, included South Hedland’s Baler Primary School, RSL’s Community Gardens and Care for Hedland’s containers for change program in Wedgefield. At Baler Primary School the focus was on student’s education and efforts around recycling, where every day students were asked to weigh their recycling as a form of competition. Care for Hedland Environmental Association chairperson Kelly Howlett hosted the tour. She said it was all about showcasing the town’s last 12 months of projects and containers for change was a particularly proud achievement. “We’re obviously proud of the containers for change program which started in October and we were really keen to show the judges that,” she said. “We use the awards as a kind of annual report for our community to showcase all the fantastic things that have happened in the last 12 months. “We were proud of showing our community and how we are all making it a better place..together we were able to show off what Hedland has been working on and achieving.”
