Port Hedland residents have eagerly awaited the start of community events since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and will now be able to enjoy some family fun with the relaunch of the widely popular Sunset Food Markets and Twilight Movies series.

The community can head back to the outdoor flicks from next week at the Civic Centre Gardens to enjoy a stunning Pilbara sunset and some movie magic, while families at the Sunset Food Markets can have their tastebuds tantalised at Marapikurrinya Park.

COVID-19 stopped the fun earlier this year but the return of the events means the community can again support local business.

Commissioner Fred Riebeling welcomed back the events and praised locals for their resilience and dedication to stopping the spread of COVID-19.

“Id like to thank the local community for following public health advice in recent months, contributing to low numbers of COVID-19 transmission in regional WA,” he said.

“Because of these tremendous efforts, the Town is able to bring back popular events for the remainder of 2020 and into 2021.”

Mr Riebeling said the markets had previously been a hit with the locals and enthusiasm for community events had grown, increasing interest in Port Hedland as a “family-friendly destination.”

“As we’ve seen with the recent See You At ... Neighbourhood Events series, the community has shown a willingness to come together whilst still observing COVID-safe practices,” he said.

Try My Thai food stall head chef and operator Mudmee Vigar said she looked forward to cooking again.

“COVID stopped everything for a while but it will be good to have everyone together again,” she said.

The Twilight Movies Series will be held each Saturday from September 5. The outdoor markets will return from September 11, running from 5-9pm.
